Projection Mapping

What to plan before starting a projection mapping project

The most important technical and experience questions to answer before equipment and content production begin.

Start with the audience and story

Define where people stand or move, how long they remain, what they should understand and whether they participate. These decisions shape the surface, scale, pacing and interaction more usefully than selecting a projector first.

A building facade, dining table, museum wall and product reveal all use projection mapping differently because the audience relationship with the surface is different.

Study the real environment

Measure the surface and record material, colour, texture, ambient light, viewing position, mounting options, power, network, ventilation and equipment access.

Throw distance and lens availability can change the design. Outdoor work also needs weather planning, safe rigging, event permissions and a clear operating window.

Design content for geometry

Mapped content is composed for the real surface. Spatial storyboards should account for edges, depth, occlusion, audience position and any projector overlap.

Test representative sequences early. A beautiful flat animation may not remain readable when stretched across architecture or viewed from an unexpected angle.

Plan playback and operation

Temporary events need cueing, rehearsal and recovery procedures. Permanent installations need scheduling, monitoring, remote support, content updates, maintenance access and a safe fallback state.

Document who starts the system, what they can control and how a fault is reported. Operational clarity is part of the visitor experience.

Discuss the decision in your context

Every project has different users, constraints and operating responsibilities. Appnautics can help frame the problem, test the critical uncertainty and define a practical delivery path.
